In the midst of Iquitos, there is a healer who performs miracles and extraordinary feats on a daily basis. His name is Maestro Javier DaSilva, and I have been living with him and watching his every move for the last 3 months.

One of the first things that caught my attention about Javier is that his house was full of patients, most of them Peruvians. As many as 40 or 50 people come every day to receive their healing. He has over 20 students, and out of them, 5 or 6 are already masters themselves. Javier’s ayahuasca is also quite probably the strongest in Iquitos. He says it is because he sends his own powers to each student to amplify the experience which the plants give. Fine, but what about the miracles?

I suppose the first miracle would be Javier’s astral operations. This concept is pretty simple to understand – an operation is performed on the patient’s astral body, and the results manifest in the physical. Before their operations, the patients are prepared with spiritual injections of vitamins, antibiotics, hormones, or other medicines. This is done during the nights by invisible spiritual doctors whom Javier controls and instructs. The patients actually feel the injections. Once, a man said that the sleeve of his shirt was wet when he woke up. “I thought I somehow urinated on it, but that’s impossible”, he told us. “And the veins on both my arms hurt”.

The patients also feel the operations. Theres is pain in the area that was operated, and several days in bed are usually required, followed by a week of rest. After another week or two, the patients begin to manifest symptoms of health on the physical level. Any organ in the body can be operated on in this way. Transplants of the heart, the lungs, the liver and other organs happen on a daily basis.

At first, I had difficulty believing that all this could be real. I asked Javier if I could talk with the patients. He readily agreed, and I recorded and filmed many conversations. I came upon two people who were cured from AIDS, many who were cured from cancer, 4 or 5 people who could not walk, and a host of people with other problems, all of them resolved through Javier’s work.

The second miracle I want to talk about is his consultations. I am still surprised when after singing a 5 minute song and smoking a cigarette, Javier is able to pinpoint with precision all of the health and other issues the person before him has. He tells the patient where the pains are and why. And it is always correct. He tells the patients about their past, about their relationships, even about the state of health of their family members. He also sees their possible futures. All of this is seen in a few minutes of time, and without the help of ayahuasca. Then he tells them that everything can be fixed for a price, and he fixes everything after they pay. His prices are not cheap by Peruvian standards, but are clearly worth every centimo because the number of his patients is always increasing.

The third miracle is distance healing and distance viewing. Javier is able to do his consultation over distance just by knowing the person’s name and birthday. Then, he can perform a treatment over distance. A woman from Canada with an incurable condition of permanent rage due to side effects of pharmaceutical drugs asked me to connect her with Javier for a distance healing. The day after he sent the doctors to her, she felt “significantly better than [she] had felt in three years” and told me that she “owed [me] and Javier her life”.

I also had Javier work over distance on all of my family, including my dog and my girlfriend. The first thing he cured was my dog’s infection, which had been really bad for over three weeks. He diagnosed my father as having back pain and cured it in several weeks. He also cured my girlfriend’s acne which was a condition she had all of her life due to being born premature. All of these things I could easily verify and they have actually happened.

Javier also has the power to read people’s minds and has knowledge of things he could not possibly know by ordinary means. For example, when I thought of becoming his student, he answered my thought by speaking to me. “Do you really want to learn?”, he asked. He continuously tells me that he watches my thoughts, and I have verified many times that he knows exactly what is on my mind. When I was staying in the jungle, I worked outside naked. Javier was in Iquitos at the time, but when we had a ceremony that evening, he commented on my nudity. “The spirits of the forest are proud of you! They say you are a real man to be working naked”.

There have been several miracle healings that I have witnessed. People were brought in on stretchers or in hammocks and later walked back to their houses without assistance. These healings took place in the span of less than a few hours. But I cannot possibly hope to describe all of the extraordinary things I have seen so far. One last curiosity I will mention is Javier’s channeling of spirits.

Javier is a medium, which means that he is able to allow other spirits to enter his body. When he does this, both his voice and his personality change. Sometimes he keeps it up for as long as an hour. This is one aspect of Javier’s work that I found especially difficult to accept and believe. Some people believe that he is just a very good actor, and I have also been very skeptical about this matter. Whenever he channeled a spirit, I watched and listened extra carefully for any slips that would indicate that he is acting. I never found any.

Javier has channeled women on several occasions. His voice changed to a high pitched tone, his vocabulary and his intonation also changed, but a certain consistency remained. Many times, he sang songs while still using the woman’s voice. This would be a difficult task even for the most accomplished actor. The songs were not sung in falsetto!

I also saw him channel Indians several times, mostly to perform extractions (sucking illness out of a person’s body). He also channeled various gods and spirits of the forest, giving us the blessings of each one. On one occasion, he channeled a patient’s diseased husband. In this role, he spoke about many things personal to the family. He spoke with a woman and her son, commenting on their relationship, their activities, and their thoughts. It has been an amazing experience to see and hear all this. I could go on and on about it, but the space of an article only permits so much.
